Changing Appearances

This is a more advanced tutorial and expects you to know a few things about PSP.

Have you ever seen a coloring page on the web that you'd like to color in PSP or perhaps join in a coloring page contest but you aren't sure how to color it?  Well this is a basic lesson on how to do this although you do need to know how to use the layer palette and the magic wand.

This tutorial has a lot of repetition!

Supplies you will need:

An image. Now I am using this jpg image but you may use another. This is an image Tinkerbell. Just click on the image to view the full size and download. Open up your image in PSP, use shift D to copy and then close out the original.

Now if you use another image you may need to do this step (for the one supplied you can skip down to the next).  If your image is in gif format, which many of the coloring pages on the web are, or if you go to color it and it will only do black and white then  you need to increase the color depth.  You do this by going under colors and scrolling down to the bottom where it says "Increase color depth" and change it to 16 million.

First we are going to color Tink's dress.  Click on your magic wand, tool settings set to RPG Value, Tolerance 30.

Go to your image and click anywhere on the dress area.  You should now have marching ants around Tink's dress.  Now you want to modify your selection:

Go under selections to Modify and expand by 1
Go under selections to Modify and feather by 2
While still selected create a new raster layer.  Click on flood fill.  I used #9FCA85 but you can use another color. Flood fill your selected area.   Now on your layer palette change your layer from normal to Multiply

Select none
Now on your layer palette select your background again.  Using your magic wand with the same settings as before and then click on one of the shoe areas of Tink.  Now to select more then one area hold your shift key as you choose other areas.  Now I'm choosing to do the one shoe and the top of the other shoe:
